Gamer's Review - Goodbye Deponia (First Dive)

Welcome to the last installment in "How many ways Rufus has pain inflicted on him". Welcome back to Deponia...."Goodbye Deponia" starts immediately after "Chaos on Deponia" with the heroes still trying to figure out a way to save Deponia....and Rufus is being a doof. We open with the crew traveling on the rails (it used to be water!) and well comedy still reigns high in this installment....to be put in simple terms Goal gets undressed and calls Rufus an As...ole (I can't believe it was the same in German audio track too.) in the first 20 minutes....and oh the roof gets blown off thanks to Rufus. The interface is still the same with point style click gameplay complete with the running gag....the tutorial set in the same exact location with a snarky "Teacher" grudgingly teaching Rufus.

This looks familiar...and oh look its Toni!
The art style maintains the trademark "junk-punk" feel of the series but since this is end times and Deponia hangs in the balance....lots of earthen tones of rusty red, the sky has an angry coat of sot, and dark shadows abound as if something sinister is being foreshadowed...not just a planet about to be blown up. In addition, since Rufus moved the transport to the up in the air....the settings so far are located suspended in the sky along the rail system.

What does Rufus's story have in store and will Deponia be saved....just wait and see.

My Friends Are Djs #38 - Fore!

During sketching brain storming...for this one just went right to the point and many sane people in a club can relate to this.....you're only allowed to whip and text on the smart phone if you have say a worried mom at home concerned about you flying solo on clubbing night (yep from exp.). Other times PUT THE PHONES away especially on the dance floor.....it was an BLEH sight to see an entire group near the stage texting on their phones.....felt sorry for the dj behind the decks. Dude enjoy the moment and the beautiful world. Purely a metaphor of what I want to do to those smart phones.....unless I really bring a club to a club....tired to go for golf club then ended up as a hockey/golf club combo. Wished I did a better job to show the swing!

My Friends Are Djs #37 - "I Am Pin Cushion"

This was based off an experience in a club...specifically the Vinai night......for the love of pizza bagels!!! NEVER jump on someone's shoulders UNINVITED!!! That what someone did to be when my picture was being taken and as expected I yelled "GET OFF" & flicked the guy off. If anyone knows me I tend to get violent and panicky if anyone (especially strangers) suddenly touches me like that. Kind of an empowering moment for me. Never know when my clubbing cosplay is going to have spines on the back or not.

Meet "Pin Cushion", a Venusian bounty hunter with an animal demeanor & dubious morals, from the jungle-desert (surprised?) planet, Venus. He's revived from an old drawing of an bone-skinny alien reptilian from my high school days. As for back story....he's a very skilled gun for hire specializing in as he would say..."Sneaking is what I do best" and assassination however he doesn't get many jobs. Most people don't take his skills seriously to due his wacky/ animal personality.."Pin Cushion eats yum yum *snickers*" and his not so imposing, bony appearance. Yep his poisonous, razor sharp spines (they're regrow-able) are kind of painful, if someone is stupid enough to jump on top of him from behind. Telu usually hires him for data gathering jobs and pays him a bonus of chicken-balls (his yum yums) if he manages not to hurt or kill anyone after the job is done.

My Friends Are Djs #36 - 3 Mice and A Bird

Well after surviving the fallout from the Vinai night...I got some new stuff to create and that night provided alot of inspiration for the web comic like this one. Went the to the point route for starters....and prob the first time a song is alluded/ involved.

Those experienced with being in clubs can relate to this...they is always the crowd with the suspicious, flirty, and submissive types mixed in; the Mouse. In addition, allusions to the AronChupa song "I'm an Albatraoz" (and its Just Dance 2016 adaption which involves a pink ballerina..shown below) are made with the use of mice and the lone, pink albatross....plus it feel just right with the certain club demography. The mice and albatross in the comic universe are actually very tiny, sentient "Lil' Bots" from Mercury....they're named the "3 Blind Mice" and "The Albatross".

The eureka moment was also triggered during the Vinai night, the Vinai brothers told everyone to raise their iphones to create stars. I don't own an iphone...no interest or use in one....but I do have something else that will suit the job very well and in a show video gamer pride....I whip out my Nintendo 3DS...in a sea of mice, the albatross flies!

TyDi and Vinai Night in Vancouver

Well that was probably one of the most insane nights of my life AGAIN....for both good and bad reasons. Most of the bad reasons involved crazy people (in a nutshell...I am not the human pillow or punchbag!!!), stabbing people by accident with my flag a few times (sorry I got a little eager during certain songs) and me getting uncomfortable/emotionally tense in crowd spaces...no hard feelings to anyone, its just my instincts to push away anything that touches me...despite loving dance music passioantely for over 16 years now, I'm never going to get used to clubbing crowds/culture.

Ok that's dealt with....I was really looking forward to seeing the Italian dj siblings, Vinai live on stage. This is the first time I ever seen djs who are not my friends, however Vinai are friends of my friends....confusing yet? I was excited yet nervous for that night flying solo and being unique from clubbing crowds. However I continued being unique. I burrowed the vest from a Miku store bought cosplay paired it with shorts contained one of my cross stitch poke-pixel patches plus lacy gloves for the basic cosplay-stylish look and then the hard part/magic. Covered my cheek and arms in body paint! It took 1 1/2 hours to get all the make up on and not counting the manicure I did.

Went for my unique Martian Mutation look but with a neon colour twist for club styling. All the green mutations glowed lime green under the venue's black light. It was visually stunning and it did attract attention. I did not know until the last moment. The Miku vest/ black shorts & tie combo makes me resemble a female version of Djs From Mars.

Mostly Rainbow Honey was used....Green: Calama and the Glitter Overlay: Underwater World. The green stars glows under UV light.

Well I arrived really early to the venue to get the best spots near the dj booth. even though the door was open I was told by a staff member, I wasn't allowed inside the venue. Several staff suggested I wait in the casino across the street which has a warm cafe to wait in but remembering the last time I was in Casino with facepaint on...I wasn't too welcomed by casino patrons...I instead elected to stay underneath the cover areas till its time which the staff allowed me to. The staff who told me I couldn't come in felt so bad for leaving me out in the cold and rain (didn't bother me too much...cold never bothered me anyway) that he offered me a drink on the house (I found out at the same-time he was the bartender). Aww that is sweet but I wasn't planning on drinking even if the drink is not alcoholic...I don't want trips to the little girl's room and drinking alcohol will cause migraines so I hydrated before arriving so I politely declined but shake his hand as thanks-you're good. I am very thankful to the staff in general that night.

As for the actual event....wow first up was TyDi. I didn't know him before hand but I was loving what I was hearing and he was such a sweet guy interacting with the crowds with friendly mannerisms. His style is more trance like and "softer" in compare to Vinai but I liked it and it was a pleasant surprise. He even dropped a few treats by dropping unreleased tracks for the Vancouver to listen for the first time. Nice and tidy....haha you knew I was going to drop that pun.

TyDi's Unreleased Track dropped for the first time.

Even a Robo Stilt-Walker joins in. I was freaked out by the sound of his Co2 gun and the fact it can blast off my make up.

Then TyDi leaves the decks, the lights dim (didn't I just see two pairs of feet sneak by???), the music built into emotions, in sync with the futuristic visuals of launchpad spelling out V-I-N-A-I ...then POOOF it's the Vinai brothers popping up behind the decks opening with "Louder" So epic!!! Oh I waved my flag in time with the music with alot of passion and screaming "Italia!" at the same time...I really love Italian dance music. Oh the set was awesome with surreal/sci-fi visuals (was that the orb from Guardians of the Galaxy???), energetic, bouncy tracks ( yep the floor was bouncing with Bounce Generation), aww they played Frontier in the closing and some tracks that brought back childhood memories in new forms...namely Darude's Sandstorm and Eiffel 65's Blue. During the set Vinai tells everyone to get their iphones out to create a field of stars for an emotional bit. Well I don't own an Iphone (no interest or use)...I did have something else and in a slight show of video-gaming pride....I whip out my still switched on Nintendo 3DS XL!!! HAHAH that is so hilarious and empowering at the same time....in a sea of Iphones...there is one 3DS rising.

Well at the end, i was lucky enough to get autographs from them....I had the flag I was waving signed! Plus I got to shake hands with one of them (I think he was smiling at me during the set cause he eyes was on my flag)....he is so sweet! I told the Vinai brothers, my friends (who are also their friends) said many good things about their music so I wanted to hear it live...then it came out as happy emotions from there. I trying to say this while hopping up and down a glass barrier the same height as me! The Vinai brother smiled and looked at that comment.I feel so thankful to everyone staff and djs included who were nice to the little Martian. :)
Here it is Vinai's autograph next to the Djs From Mars. It's a little water damaged from the rain but Vinai's autograph is still visible. I wish to have this flag covered with autographs from my favorite, Italian Djs.

...and here;s the photo dump

My Friends Are Djs #35 - Gas Money

The idea for this came from a tweet made by a punk-geeky rocker named Kieran Strange (see tweet HERE ) and I thought and asked for permission to use an inspiration. Thank you! Really from the stories from others in the music biz... tour life can be a rough journey....its not all cocktail parties. I thought it would be hilarious too for one Rocket Twin to drag the other twin along with a rocket car hahaha. No super sophisticated idea for designing their rocket car other then what kind of vehicle would Rocket Twins drive hmm?

My Friends Are Djs #34 - Make-Up Prep

In brainstorming just draw it down session, and the fact I'm kind of going through this at the moment with the preparations with an upcoming club night and an artist alley stint...which make up to use etc, which gets kind of interesting for me if you know paint a sizable percentage of my body and face in face paint for both clubbing and normal cosplays at times. Yep its true cosplayers might have a diverse make up collection to match different cosplays, looks and colours.

My Friends Are Djs #33 - "A Simple Door"

Thinking about the current social mood right now...I decided to go the surreal and abstract/ experimental route with this panel. Often in life the seemingly "simple" answer is actually very complex and may not be right in front of your nose. This piece is a digital and traditional mixed medium experimental exercise. First the actual room was hand drawn and then painted...then the flowers were cropped and edited into the piece digitally on the computer. All these done..using only the system's built in paint and photo editing programs. Not the most sophisticated method but it does the job and I'm very happy to try out a very experimental approach. The picture was photographed by me at Buchart Gardens in Victoria, British Columbia.

My Friends Are Djs #32 - "Rainy Days"

Plucked out sketch from a brainstorming session for this turn.....this sketch was inspired by a particular massive, high profile EDM festival that drowned by rainstorms and turned in a mudfest of the hellkind...not mentioning which festival it was. Other then hehe better pack for rains in the rainy season....and it was fun experimenting with different tools Breezey replaces her "hair pins" with.

My Friends Are Djs #31 - Lucid

I admit I was so caught with things ont his end that I forgot to plan out properly this week's panel..so I looked through my pencil sketches for ideas....then I stumbled upon the sketch for Lucid - the hallucinatory fiend and the doom of Neptune. For a quick recap is a surreal "space demon" who is extremely lazy but emits a gas that causes very vivid and dangerous hallucinations. I was also thinking...after the wild Halloween parties, I wonder how many people are recovering from hangover and trippy moments?! I just went wild with the water colour washes to reflect Lucid's trippy nature...wished the scanning brought out the colours more.

PS I have never taken drugs and never plan to ever....I'm already very familiar with its effects.

My Friends Are Djs #30 - Just Push Play??

One of things in the dj world that absolutely overwhelms me and looks like "magic" to me is....the actual dj deck set up....this panel is an abstraction of those feelings. When I saw my friend's set up in action everything looked alien to me and it felt like a hive nest's activity...it was absolute WHOA! I'm very scared to even touch a set up in fear of wrecking something. However I'm kind of aware of whats going on with djs mixing behind the decks and I'm always keenly observing in interest.....its more then just pushing play!

This particular high-tech dj deck belongs to Komodo, the old Martian, veteran dj. His decks is mostly an abstract-fictional concept but inspired by the futuristic look of computer dj decks and the touch screen mixing set up demostrated by Dj Gabry Ponte here...I would be very surprised if an actual dj comes out, looking like Komodo's decks.

My Friends Are Djs #29 - Cast of 2014-15

Well it been a short while with this humble comic project but I'm happy and having fun with this....I always wanted to do a "class" photo shot and I thought this would be the right time in particular because....if you're an electronic music fan you very much know what time of the EDM world year this is. Overall, I think the piece went well except I wish I did the look of the Desert brothers (Sandstorm and Komodo) better and slight mistake on inking Bitz...with a small cast of species from various different planets and colours its been a happy ride so far. The quote was added at the last moment.....in response to negative responses to the top 100 djs results. Two dj pals (if you're reading this you know who you are) of mine had something to say..."Music Should Unite, Not Divide". I thought it would be the perfect finishing touch to a cast of friends panel.

My Friends Are Djs #28 - Gun Rum

Well during a brain storming sketch session I thought it would be hilarious after thinking the times I saw patrons in clubs over do it on the booze (fun fact...I have never consumed alcohol in a club before)....what if I could invent the world's most dangerous/explosive cocktail AND it can be used a dangerous licensed weapon....take a look at the "Gun Powder Rum Rocket". Made of 4 ingridients including something not of this world. Fun fact, rum was actually, reportedly mixed with gunpowder back int he pirating days. Please DO NOT try at home there is a reason why gunpowder is not an ingredient any more!!!

My Friends Are Djs #27 - Storage of Music History

Well this panel came out of a brain storming sketch session for this week's comic. I thought it would straight to the point and slightly amusing/funny to outline the in nutshell history. Partially I was inspired by record stores still in business (like our family store's neighbor in Steveston Beat Merchant) and their patrons (including me) which still collect vinyls and CDs in the age of digital downloads and mp3s. Trust me there is still a market for such things among collectors...often I see customers waltzing out next door with vinyl purchases in their hands. For personally, I still love CDs because I feel "complete" with the actual disc in my collection and CDs have very clear sound quality over digital streams. Anyway thats my opinion....AND NOW....in the comic universe music produces energy which keeps their world in balance. So thats what the blue wisps are. Different genres produce different energies.

PS yep at the last minute I added in cassettes (yes I made a spelling mistake in comic) after i realize...."oh dear I forgot..how could I?". Thank you watching Guardians of the Galaxy and Peter's moves.

My Friends Are Djs #26 - "Better with Time"

Well I wanted to introduce a "veteran" dj to the cast and so here he is....Meet Komodo, Sandstorm's older brother. Komodo was inspired by veteran djs Mauro Picotto and Tiesto. Like his younger brother, Komodo's is a former military Martian, whose shell shape is based off a highly stylized lizard in this case a Komodo Dragon alluding to Mauro Picotto's old track "Komodo" but unlike his brother....he is has a very solemn, sully but fatherly deposition. He is Bitz the Cat's mentor. In addition, I wanted to highlight just how long good djs play the music biz game after reading an article Signor Picotto posted about old veteran djs in the biz getting better with time. The one regret I have is...I couldn't think of anything esle to draw in that shows Komodo's age.

My Friends Are Djs #25 - Comebacks!

The main inspiration behind this panel was certain tracks but in particular ONE track from my early teens and dance days which has returned bigger then ever I might say....Darude's Sandstorm. I was very amused that it returned suddenly out of the blue after 16 years of first hearing when it first burst on to the dance airways. Man that track and Darude were very much on fire at the time and I still remember watching Darude perform on the old "Electric Circus" program. I also remember being poked fun by the "in-crowd" for my love of dance music...being seen as "uncool" with Sandstorm being used as an example. Now I giggle in amusement cause it seems the "in-crowd" finds tracks like Sandstorm are "cool".

I just handled this panel like a simple physical, gag comedy.....you make a hit....BOOM it comes back bigger then ever. Plus meet a new character...Sandstorm. He is named after the track "Sandstorm" obviously and a Martian in a robotic, military shell. His shell colours is meant to resemble a highly stylized desert reptile. He and and his older brother (soon to make a debut) are meant to represent veteran djs who have been around in the music scene for a very long time. Enjoy!

My Friends Are Djs #24 - Friendship

With the last week of voting for DJ Mag top 100 left...I thought it would be a good time to put up this panel. I do love my DJ friends for the people they are and I was just purely thankful we're similar in personality and get along very well....them being the top DJs in the world was just a "side" bonus. So this is my artistic idea of that feeling. Went for the straight to the point approach for this one. AT first I wanted to have them hugging....then I realized how can they hug without looking silly...if they have no actual arms. So went for the TV Heads giving Breezey anti-gravity ride through the clouds. She looks happy.

My Friends Are Djs #23 - Humble Gifts

Now on occasion djs do give away gifts mostly in the form of mp3s.....if that does happen remember to thank the dj for it....this is the inspiration behind this panel and my thanks to all those many djs were nice enough to give gifts to their fans, which include real life djs which partly served as the inspiration for Rocket Twins, TV Heads, and Bitz....Blasterjaxx, Djs From Mars, and Martin Garrix respectively....Grazies.

My Friends Are Djs #22 - Let It Boom

For this one and due to lack of time to due stuff non-comic related.....I just went right to the point and the artistic route. Whatever is your music....whether its the kind of music you make or the music you love....make it boom with joy and love.

My Friends Are Djs #21 - Feed Feuds

Even if you're a dj or not....don't make your feuds public for all to see whether its on social media or live action in public, its not pretty....you might not mean those words so better make them private if you feel the need to vent. Especially in this day and age of social media and digital tech....this kind of stuff seems to happen more in real time. This feed is not based on any real life dj-social media feuds in particular but rather a general-non fictional example of a "childish" feud made public, in respect to real djs. The Rocket Twins were chosen to show some inter brother dynamics between them.

My Friends Are Djs #20 - Sleepytime

This short is dedicated to all the djs that can literally sleep anyway and in any position possible. I also got the idea after hearing about how many lack of sleep stories with djs that I thought...hmmm sleep must be very precious to them. At first, it was just going to be Breezey and the Tv Heads in this shot...then I found out about Martin Garrix's special talent of "sleeping"...which is just about anywhere so I thought.."oh this is too tempting"...draws in Bitz in a weird sleeping pose then added the Rocket Twins to fill in space. Actually its kind of a cute shot....enjoy

My Friends Are Djs #19 - Tomorrow

Hehe this panel's gag came about from I joke I made on the spot and tweeted to a few Dutch Djs, which made them laugh, when they played at Tomorrow....so you're playing tomorrow which is today or tomorrow tomorrow....kind of inspired by the old "whose on first" gag. Note one of the biggest music festival in the world is called Tomorrowland!

In addition we have a new character to the cast...Meet Telu-Rica, the reporter. If you didn't guess from her appearance, she's Ethereal's twin sister but completely opposite in personality. Telu (as she's known for short) is outgoing, "showy" and talkative but completely loyal to her sister and can "data-mine" her interviewees with a smile, and an ace reporter with her own modest sized, musical news outlet "Telu-Spot". She is also can knock out nearby communications systems temporary with her presence while keeping her "stuff" running via strange but fragile Neptunian biology and a master hacker. Behind closed doors, she's one of the top alien-black market data-brokers offering her services in exchange for "payment" or her sister forcing her to do a "favor". Her data "wealth" and skills makes her a force to be reckon with despite the fragile biology of Neptunians.

Design wise like her twin sister Ethereal...Telu-Rica is based off a sea angel, a type of sea slug which really does look like that minus the alien, green colour. The green colouration was chosen to create contrast with her sister along with actually having a visible mouth to speak with. Telu's name is a word pun-corruption of the term "Telluric Currents" which are electrical currents that travel underground through the earth or sea..fitting for a data broker who resembles a sea creature and to create further contrast from Ethereal's "Airy" name.

My Friends Are Djs #18 - Dreams and Nightmares

In this panel Ethereal is remembering a painful memory...we get to know a tiny bit of Ethereal's history which is the monster that caused the fall of her home world....meet Lucid the Hallucinatory Fiend (or the Downfaller of Neptune). It is the same species as Scourage (Click here for more info --> HERE ) except Lucid is lazy, and a sloth. Lucid emits a gas which cause very vivid hallucinations of intense, surreal dreams which over time becomes a real nightmare. Illusions get more vivid-wild as time passes on. Lucid will eventually make its full body debut. Design wise, Lucid is based off sea cucumber and sea slugs for that grotesques/monstrous yet wild feel. The concept inspiration for Lucid came in response and as warning against hallucinatory drugs and overt romanticism of "dreams"/fairy tales motifs/concepts within dance music culture....every dream has its nightmares along side.

PS I have never taken drugs...and I know and seen what they can do.

My Friends Are Djs #17 - How to Mash

As an affectionate jab and joking around with my pals (big shout out to them) who are the masters of mash ups I made this and kept it straight to the point. In the music world a mash up is when two or more tracks are taken and mashed into one. For this piece I kind of went that route....really I just went crazy-random and ended up with some post modern-patch work...thing! Hehe this was a fun short to draw hehe.

Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions in Vancouver

Well....a night with the VSO and Pokemon was wow magical and amazing. This is my 3rd videog ame related concert at the Orpheum but my first all "one game" concert....Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions.

Wow where to start other then it was an amazing and once in a life time experience for any pokemon trainer to experience and a very unique symphonic concert experience in general, Pokemon trainers came and some were decked out in Poke-Cosplays including me decked out in my flaming red-white Talonflame clubbing cosplay and raggedy Kyogre plushie in hand. Pretty amazing cosplays that showed up including the subway masters of Unova, and plenty of cute Pokemon Gijinkas spanning different types. Hmm no merchandise booth hmm. I was lucky enough to get front row seats, and wow I get to see all the stage action (thats a really big bass cello in front of me) including the musicians warming and tuning their instruments.

As for the concert itself, wow first it started with rounds of "who's that pokemon?" as the audience took their seats. Then the conductor herself takes her place and you hear the familiar call of....PIKACHU!!!! The repertoire starts off at the begining at the little town called Pallet Town then roaming our way through time to end in Kalos. Wow I say it was awesome to hear the era "8-bit" sounds translated into symphonic sounds. My favorite segments were the opening numbers starting out in Pallet Town, Ecruteak Town (I have been to the real life Ecruteak Town, Kyoto so this brought back memories),
Kyogre's theme (yep my Kyogre plushie seemed happy at this part), and the heartstrings pulls of the trip through Kalos. The official finale had electronica sounds mixed in and my heart and the conductor went into overdrive with passion. I wish they included my favorite song in the Pokemon World...Lugia's Song aka "Legend Comes to Life". It would have sounded beautiful with a symphony. Of course you to have an encore...and what? A massive sing-a-long of the original Pokemon theme! Plus a tribute to the recently deceased Iwata-San.

It was beautiful to see in the opening number all the opening titles for all the games starting from RBY to XY flying in order on the big screen and plus the visuals included game segments from respective games playing along side the corresponding tunes. Visuals were just great. In addition to gameplay elements there were graphical visuals of scenary to represent each region in the Pokemon World. For example, since most of the Pokemon World is based off prefectures in Japan...some of the landscape shots vaguely looked like the Japanese countryside while the trip through Kalos looked like France...Kalos being based on France.

In the end....this long time Pokemon trainer had one very magical experience with alot of fewllow Pokmon Trainers in the audience. I saw Cheers!
